Renaissance BioScience is shifting its focus for its proprietary RNA interference (RNAi) platform, aiming to extend the reach of its bio-pesticide technology from foliage-feeding insects to soil-dwelling agricultural pests. The initial and highly consequential target for this pivot is the destructive wireworm, a larvae stage of click beetles known for severely damaging crops like potatoes, root vegetables, corn, and cereals while remaining undetected underground.
This represents a fundamentally different technical challenge than the company’s previous work on above-ground insects. According to Chief Scientific Officer Dr. John Husnik, wireworms present a significant hurdle because they can spend up to five years as larvae below ground, limiting conventional control options for growers. The success of this project hinges on adapting their yeast bioengineering platform to function effectively in the subterranean environment.
Renaissance BioScience must prove that its yeast RNAi system can transition from aerial pest control to effective subterranean delivery and action.
If Renaissance successfully adapts its technology for below-ground pests, the company could dramatically expand both its market scope and the types of agricultural applications it can address. While wireworms are an obvious first target, Husnik stressed that this project is strategically important because it opens the door to developing precision bio-pesticides for an entirely new category of economically costly pests.

The company’s work aims not only to provide growers with a novel tool for managing wireworms but also to validate the platform's capability against a broad range of underground threats, moving past its initial focus on leaf-feeding insects.
