3C Therapeutics has partnered with Variational AI to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its cancer drug discovery pipeline. The initiative aims to significantly shorten the path from initial concept to laboratory-validated lead candidates for next-generation treatments.
The company develops advanced therapeutics using a proprietary TriCore Degrader-Antibody Conjugate (DAC) system, which delivers protein-degrading payloads selectively to targeted cancer cells. According to CEO Dan Wattier, the primary bottleneck in developing these complex treatments is the sheer time and resources required to physically create and test new compounds in the lab.
The integration of generative AI into DAC development shifts the early research focus from slow physical screening to rapid computational design, accelerating the identification of promising molecular leads.
To overcome this limitation, 3C Therapeutics is adopting Variational AI’s Enki platform. Generative AI allows the team to computationally generate and rank thousands of novel ligand candidates across a much wider chemical space than traditional methods permit. This ability enables them to focus limited laboratory time on the most promising designs from the outset.
The immediate goal for this collaboration is taking these AI-generated ligands, integrating them into the TriCore platform, and selecting a highly viable lead DAC candidate for further development. The company stated it is eager to prove that AI can maintain the necessary potency and selectivity when these designed molecules are synthesized and built into the proprietary system.
This partnership was facilitated through the Integrated Marketplace program, which provided critical support by mitigating the financial risks associated with adopting cutting-edge technology in drug discovery. For 3C Therapeutics, this collaboration reinforces British Columbia’s position as a hub for precision oncology, linking local solution providers and therapeutics companies to advance treatments for patients with limited options.
